Sketch Crawl 101

June 27th, 2011

We had a great time at our 2nd sketchbook Crawl on June 18th at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens. It was actually pretty nice when we arrived at 10 am, nice breeze and by about 12:00 pm when we were leaving, it was beginning to warm up a bit, so for a hot summer day, it wasn’t bad out among the shade trees at the Gardens. There were folks painting, sketching, visiting and having an all around creative time.  Our next sketch crawl will be July 16. If you are interested in coming, email me at sharen@sharenchatterton.com for more info.

Flower Gardening 101

March 14th, 2011

Spring is definitely in the air and of coarse gardening and flowers are forever on my mind. My newest piece is a watercolor, painted on Arches 140 lb Natural White watercolor paper. I love pansies, these do really well in late fall here in North Texas and will survive and bloom through much of the winter (except when we get snow and freezing temps for four days). Then in early spring they really come alive again, and will bloom up until we start getting those warm Texas temps.  Our pansies are just beautiful now. This piece has a few of those gardening necessities, along with some gorgeous pansies. I am still working on it, as usual. There is still plenty of work to be done on the soil and leaves, as I continue to layer the watercolors to get the intensity that I am looking for in them. Just a note, I will be demo painting at the Central Market in Southlake, Saturday April 2, 2011 and I will be showing and selling at the New Vintage Wine and Gallery Trail Exhibit and Sale, Lancaster Theater and Weems Alley, Grapevine, Texas, Saturday, April 9, 2011, hope you can come by and visit me, at either or both these events.

Grapevine Art Project Show and Painting on Plywood at Fellowship Church

October 26th, 2010
The Art of Gardening

The Art of Gardening

Had a great time at the Grapevine Art Project Show, despite the rain and threat of a tornado! Not a big fan of tornado threats, that’s just not suppose to happen in October, but it did. After my anxiety attack subsided, we all were provided with a great opportunity to have some nice long conversations, when they shut us all in the area until the threat had passed. Thank you to all who came out on Friday evening despite the Rangers playing; WooHoo, World Series Bound, and those who braved the weather on Saturday. The Art of Gardening won Peoples Choice for Palette, many thanks to all who voted! Sunday,  I painted at the Source for Fellowship Creative. What a wonderful time. I actually painted this piece on plywood and finished it in under 2 hours, not bad for someone who takes weeks and weeks on her paintings. Painted a lot looser and just had fun. There were three other artists painting at the same time, all were super talented and such an inspiration!

Grapevine Art Project and Michael Mentler

July 2nd, 2010
Michael Mentler

Michael Mentler

Went to the quarterly GAP meeting last night, they brought in Michael Mentler, from the Society of Figurative Arts, a well known portrait artist and teacher. He did a short workshop/demonstration on heads, faces and features, that was excellent. What a talented man and so knowledgeable about the human form. Two of many notable statements he made ” the more you know about your subject, the better you are at drawing it” and “we see what we know”. Words to grow with. I was soooooo inspired by his drawing. Only one hour of watching and sketching with him has made me love drawing and painting even more, if that is possible. Check out more information about Michael Mentler at www.tsofa.com

Weekend of Painting

May 10th, 2010
Painting at Texas Discovery Gardens

Painting at Texas Discovery Gardens

Had a great weekend, full of painting. Saturday was so much fun, painting at the gallery, meeting and visiting with the visitors at the “Nature of Flowers” exhibit in the Gallery of Texas Discovery Gardens. I also went through the butterfly house and got some great photos. I spent time painting in the beautiful botanic gardens in Grapevine, had a great spot under a shade tree, met lots of people and enjoyed painting outdoors, what a beautiful place.  Sunday, after church I went over to my son and daughter-in-laws to paint on the nursery wall. Almost finished with the giraffe. I think Duncan is going to love it! Well, I have a full week of work ahead, best get to it.
