Just a Little Koi
This piece probably took me longer than any other piece I have attempted. It is truly a mixed media. I utilized college, watercolor, and acrylics. The Koi are each hand made out of different pieces of archival paper, each piece of paper is hand cut, every scale, every fin, every eye. Once the pieces are cut, I lay them out, then glue them together to form the Koi. I use very small, sharp scissors, so that I can get the precise cut that I need. The orchids are done in watercolor and then cut from the watercolor paper and mounted to the canvas. I used acrylics for all the rocks, bubbles, and water; although it is the background, it is one of my favorite parts of the work. This piece represents two of the many things that bring me joy. One, the orchids; we have several orchids as house plants, they are surprisingly easy to grow and with a little TLC, will bloom once or twice a year, depending on the species. The flowers are so detailed, each a work of art in itself. The second is our Koi pond, in our side yard. I could spend hours enjoying the sound of the waterfall and watching the graceful gliding of the Koi through the water. My hope is that this piece brings the joy and peace that I experience in growing orchids and watching our Koi, onto the canvas and into the heart of the viewer.
