2010 and Art

December 30th, 2009
A little more organized for 2010

A little more organized for 2010

I am really looking forward to this year. I am in the process now of reorganizing my studio. My studio is small, so I really have to figure out ways to maximize my space. I am also working on a newsletter called “The Art of Smiles”, my goal is to send it out once a month. It will give info on what I am working on, where I will be showing my work and other bits and pieces of info. Be sure and subscribe to “The Art of Smiles” newsletter on my web site www.joyfuldesigner.com. I am also excited about spending more time painting. This is going to be a great year! Best wishes to all for an amazing 2010!

Small Canvases

December 22nd, 2009
8 x 8 canvas

8 x 8 canvas

I’ve decided to start work on some small canvases, after finishing my last 36″ x 48″ Painted Lady. I have two going right now, an orange zinnia, which is one of my favorite flowers, this is on a 12″ x 12″ canvas and a gulf fritillary on an 8″ x 8″ canvas. I really love painting the large canvases, but the small allow me to really concentrate on the details and I am a detail person. With Christmas around the corner, I’m not finding much time to paint, but I am more than enjoying the trade off, time with family and friends, whom I love dearly! Wishing the best of the Holidays to all.

Passion Flowers and Butterflies

December 14th, 2009
Twin Mix II

Twin Mix II

This work is a collaborative effort between Karen and I. Our inspiration, the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly and the beautifully intricate passion flower.  We have so many of these Fritillary Butterflies in our side yard, the reason we have them, is because we have several passion vines planted. These butterfly lay their eggs on the leaves of the passion vine, they are very small yellow spheres, which eventually produce the caterpillar. These guys have a ferocious appetite and could easily strip all the leaves on the vine. The leaves grow back, and the vine continues to produce its beautiful flower, as the chrysalis transform into the Fritillary butterfly. It is spectacular to come out in the morning and have 30 or more butterflies scurrying about our yard. Plant some passion vines, if they will thrive in your area,  you will be providing much needed habitat for many varieties of Fritillary butterflies.

“The Painted Lady”

"The Painted Lady"

"The Painted Lady"

I have finally finished my painting “The Painted Lady”.  The focal point of this piece is of coarse, the Painted Lady Butterfly. This is one of the most familiar butterflies in North America, as well as around the world.  If you want to attract these pretty ladies to your yard, plant thistle, hollyhocks, common sunflowers, yarrow and mallows. The butterfly will lay their eggs on these plants and the larvae ie. caterpillars will feast on these when they hatch out.  The painted lady has to lay her eggs on or very near the right food plant for the eggs, otherwise the caterpillars will not survive. These babies have a ferocious appetite and begin eating as soon as they hatch. The sweet nectar plants for the painted beauties are thistles, asters, cosmos, blazing stars, iron-weed, and Joe-pye weed. Try planting a few of the host plants and nectar plants in your butterfly garden. For those plants that are invasive or less attractive, plant in containers, creating a smorgasbord for the painted ladies. Butterflies are threatened more and more everyday by loss of habitat, plant some host and nectar plants for butterfly conservation!

Organic Gardening in Small Spaces

November 30th, 2009
The beginning

The beginning

We have a small area in our side yard that we are going to turn into a garden spot. We had a couple of tomato bushes and some onions last year, but the roses around the area did not allow for much sun. So we have moved the roses and made a space around 8 x 8. We would like to grow tomatoes, oni0ns, and put a trellis for zucchini and squash. I also have some strawberry plants I would like to put in the center in a raised bed, still working on that idea. We have put a 4 foot fence around it with a gate to keep out the dogs, rabbits, etc. This was made out of left over cedar pieces that our contractor friend had. We now have to put in the boards to keep in the soil and then add organic soil. Come spring, we will plant our little garden. I can already visualize the paintings from the produce and the good tasting homegrown veggies on the table.  We’ll see how that works out. I’ll keep you posted.

    The beginning.

    The beginning.

I am now working on a 36 x 48 acrylic on canvas. My inspiration was a painted lady butterfly that was taking advantage of the sweet nectar of a zinnia in our side yard. I was able to get within inches of her. I am always amazed at the creative power of God, the detail right down to the iridescent glow on her back. All the flowers are found in our front, side and back yard, zinnias and sunflowers, all of which are absolutely spectacular when in mass. The zinnias are such a deep, rich red. I am included pictures to show the progression of my work. I’m beginning to see the light at the end, however I still have a lot more work to do on the leaves and more detail work to do on the flowers, well back to painting.

    Work continues.

    Near the end.

    Near the end.

    Work continues.

    Creativity in All of Us

    November 13th, 2009

Ahh the elusive creative self. Some people believe you are either born creative or you are not. There is also the train of thought that there is creativity inside of all of us, we just have to let it out. I.A. Taylor defined five levels of creativity in his book “ The Nature of the Creative Process. “ (P. Smith, ed. Creativity. New York: Hastings House, 1959)

    1. The first level incorporates the primitive and intuitive expression found in children and in adults who have not been trained in art. The naïve artist creates for the joy of it.
    2. The second level of creativity is the academic and technical level. At this level the artist learns skills and techniques, developing a proficiency that allows creative expression in myriad ways. The academic artist adds power to expression through mastery of craft.
    3. Many artists experiment with their craft, exploring different ways of using familiar tools and mediums. This heralds the level of invention. Breaking rules is the order of the day, challenging the boundaries of academic tradition, becoming increasingly adventurous and experimental.
    4. At the level of innovation the artist becomes more original. Materials and methods that are out of the ordinary are introduced. Now the artist breaks the boundaries.
    5. The fifth level of creativity is characterized as genius. There are individuals whose ideas and accomplishments in art and science defy explanation. Genius is arguably the one level that is unexplainable and perhaps unattainable, something that an individual is born with.”

I believe as an artist, I strive to introduce something from the first four levels into each of my works. However, I must admit the easiest has always been to create my art, just for the joy of it. I’m pretty sure the fifth level hasn’t materialized in my work yet, but I keep hoping the genius in me, is a late bloomer
